English Stream
A rigorous and well-rounded curriculum
Our English Stream offers a rich and rigorous education based on the British curriculum, which provides clear progression and strong academic standards across Maths, English and Science. This foundation is supported by the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) in the early years and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) from Key Stage 1 upward. These frameworks bring subjects together through meaningful inquiry-based themes and help children develop global awareness and important personal skills. Regular benchmark testing ensures pupils meet or exceed British curriculum standards and supports personalised next steps in learning.
Daily Learning Highlights
✓ Daily Literacy Building strong reading, writing, spelling and comprehension foundations through a structured progression.
✓ Daily Maths Ensuring secure number sense and deep conceptual understanding through the White Rose mastery approach.
✓ Daily Additional Language Lessons French, Mandarin or Dutch taught in daily sessions, with pathways for beginners and native-level learners.
✓ Daily IEYC/IPC Project-Based Learning Play and inquiry-led projects in IEYC and IPC that connect subjects meaningfully, develop critical thinking and nurture global awareness.
Literacy
Literacy is a strong focus from the early years, with daily Literacy sessions developing secure and confident foundations. Children begin with Monster Phonics before progressing to Spelling Superheroes. Through the Hamilton Trust framework, pupils explore a wide range of literary genres and develop secure writing skills, including grammar, punctuation and expressive language. Reading comprehension is taught consistently as it is vital for deep understanding and critical thinking. Traditional skills such as fluent cursive handwriting are also valued.
Mathematics
Maths is taught through daily lessons using the White Rose mastery approach. This develops strong number sense, problem-solving confidence and the ability to apply mathematical understanding in different contexts.
Science
Science follows the expectations of the British curriculum and emphasises hands-on investigation, scientific enquiry and clear progression of knowledge and skills.
Specialist subjects
Children enjoy specialist-taught Music lessons, twice-weekly PE and one of the strongest language programmes in the international school landscape, with daily French, Mandarin or Dutch lessons that build confident communication skills. Lessons are tailored to proficiency levels, supporting both beginners and native or near-native speakers. More information about our additional languages programme will appear on a dedicated page.
Technology
Devices are not used in Reception or Year 1. In Years 2 and 3, children use a shared half class set of iPads in a carefully targeted and minimalist manner. From Year 4 onward, each child is issued a school laptop for selected lessons to support effective, age-appropriate digital learning.
Altogether
Altogether, the English Stream offers a nurturing, ambitious and engaging learning environment where children are supported to grow as confident, capable and globally competent learners.
